A Basic Explanation of Fiber Optic Modes

Something to understand about fiber optic cables is that there are modes. Light signals are carried down the optical fiber modes. A mode is a pathway for that signal.

Single-mode has a thin core, only about 5-10 microns in diameter. Light is carried straight down the middle and is generally used for telephone and internet. They are ususally wrapped together in bundles and can send information over 60 miles.

Multi-mode is used primarily for shorter distances, computer networks for example. They are about 10 times larger than single-mode. Light travels by following a few different paths within the core. A trained professional will be able to tell you which type you need for your business.
