Multi-Mode Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables come in Single Mode and Multi-Mode. Yesterday, we talked about Single Mode. I want to explain a little about Multi-Mode today.

The diameter of a Multi-Mode fiber optic cable have different core sizes ranging from 50 to 100 micrometers in diameter. They can transmit data at around the same speed as Single Mode, but in shorter distances, typically under 3000 feet. Anything longer and your signal can be distorted.

Multi-Mode cables work well for (LAN) Local Area Networks, which require less length, making it the most common option as it can cost less than Single Mode.

For more information, please contact Shoreworx Communications. We will be more than happy to schedule your free site survey and help you understand which mode of fiber cabling your system requires.
